Strange Weapons
Precious one, have you ever thought about the strange weapons and tactics that are deployed in warfare in the Bible? Stop and think about it, Samson used a weapon one day in the form of a jawbone of a donkey. With this jawbone, he killed 1,000 Philistines! Now that is a powerful weapon and at the same time, it was a strange one, wasn’t it? (Judges 15:14-17)
What about the third judge of Israel named Shamgar? He took an ox goad, the thing you use to prod the oxen to make them go, and with this strange weapon, he killed 600 of the enemy. (Judges 3:31, 5:6) He was a deliverer and he saved Israel. The Bible does not record how many men Othniel killed, but Ehud is noted as killing “about 10,000 Moabites” (Judges 3:29)
And then there is Gideon, the one God called to go against a mighty host. He said, ‘you have too many in your army to fight, eliminate most of those who had volunteered. The army was reduced to 300 men, who would come against a mighty army, a great host. Do you know what the weapons were on that day? A water pitcher with a torch inside of it, and a trumpet! But it was with those strange tools a vast army was defeated that day.
What about David? When he confronted Goliath the giant all he had was a slingshot and 5 smooth stones, he took out this uncircumcised Philistine. With King Saul and all of his armor, in addition to all the men who were afraid of Goliath. Yet David knew the Lord. He took his slingshot and 5 smooth stones and slayed the giant. Praise the Lord! The power of God’s weaponry is awesome!
When Joshua led the children of Israel against the city of Jericho, they marched and at the sound of the signal, they shouted. They blew a few Rams horns at the same time. With this, the walls of the city came tumbling down, and a great victory was won by the Lord that day.
Throughout the Word of God, He has chosen to use strange weapons and tactics to gain victory. It shouldn’t be any surprise that this is true of some of the weapons He has given us: the name of Jesus is a powerful weapon, the blood of Jesus, the Word of God is a powerful weapon, praise, and prayer – all are unexpected, but powerful weapons. Just as these strange weapons God used in the Old Testament were powerful, the ones that God uses today are even more powerful! We are in a battle! We have been given powerful weapons of warfare. Pick up your weapons, and fight! You will defeat the enemy every time!
