Prayers that Move the Heart of God

Beloved one have you ever been provoked by another man or woman, and if so, did you respond in like manner or did you take the high road? Did you go share it with your friends or take it to God? There is one person who was taunted and misunderstood by the other woman Peninnah because she could not have a child, her name was Hannah. God comforted her in her misery and gave her strength and consolation in her disappointment to face her situation. She would go to the temple and pour her heart out, in tears before God for long periods of time, allowing Him to vindicate her.  She declared God’s goodness and power! She knew He has a habit of raising the lowly and humble the proud. (1 Samuel 1-10-11)

While in the temple one day she was praying and weeping for a long time. Her lips moved but she did not make a sound as she poured out her grief to God, ‘O Lord Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant, giving me a son, then I will give him back to You all the days of his life, and no razor will ever touch his head. Eli the priest was used to people coming to the feasts, eating, and drinking too much. He thought she was drunk with alcohol and rebuked her. Defending herself she said, ‘I am not a wicked woman, she was pouring out her soul to the Lord – out of her anguish and grief. Eli the priest blessed her and said, ‘May the God of Israel grant your request.’ (1 Samuel 1:9-17)

Early the next morning Hannah and her husband went back home to Ramah, where at last she conceived. (1 Samuel 1:18-20) Soon she held her tiny baby against her shoulder that she yearned for and dedicated to the Lord. After she weaned Samuel, she took him to Eli the priest at Shiloh. (1 Samuel 1:22-28) Like Jochebed placing baby Moses into the waters of the Nile River as though God’s own hands she surrendered her child to the priest’s care. (Exodus 2:1-10) Eventually, Hannah’s son became a prophet and Israel’s last judge. Samuel’s hands anointed both Saul and David as Israel’s first kings. (1 Samuel 16:1-13)

I know this is for someone today who has not yet conceived, be encouraged. Stand on the promises of God. It appears everyone left, and right is having babies around you. You have so much love to give and haven’t understood why they’re having babies, but you can’t seem to get pregnant. I understand. You have asked God, ‘What have I done so bad that I cannot have a baby?’ Believe it or not, I have walked a mile in your shoes. And you feel like half of a woman you should be. Cry out to God as Hannah did! (Psalms 119:50, Romans 5:2-5) Only God understands your grief and pain.

Like Sarah and Rachal, Hannah grieved over the children she couldn’t have. But unlike them, she took her grief directly to God. She was misunderstood by her husband and the priest, she could have easily turned her sorrow on herself or others, becoming bitter, hopeless, or vindictive. (Romans 5:2-5) But instead of having pity on herself, she poured her soul out to God. And God graciously answered her prayer and God sees you and He is listening to your prayers. When have you been profoundly disappointed? What were your prayers like then? God will meet you right where you are!

Each year Hannah went to Shiloh and presented her son Samuel with a little robe she had sewn. (1 Samuel 2:18-19) Each year Eli the priest blessed her and Elkanah, saying, ‘May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to the Lord.’ And so, Hannah became the mother of three more sons and two daughters. (1 Samuel 2:20-21) Her prayers were echoed more than a thousand years later by Mary, the mother of Jesus, expressing her praise: ‘My heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord, my horn is high and lifted high. My mouth boasts of over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance. The Lord sends poverty and wealth; He humbles, and He exalts. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. (1 Samuel 2:1-10)

Pray this with me:

Father God, I want to thank you for every prayer you have answered during my lifetime. You do hear and answer my prayers! You have answered the small prayers, big prayers, quiet prayers, loud prayers, anxious prayers, and peaceful prayers. Father shape my prayers according to your faithfulness, I repent for the times I have been selfish, and frantic, and thank You for growing my faith trusting You more and more every day in Jesus’ mighty matchless name. Amen.
