Jehovah El Elyon – The Most-High God
My precious child, El Elyon, God Most High, or sometimes LORD Most High is used through Scripture to refer to the LORD, creator of heaven and earth. El is another name that is translated as “God” and can be used in conjunction with other words to designate various aspects of God’s character. Elyon literally means “Most High” throughout the Old Testament. It expresses the extreme sovereignty and majesty of God and His highest preeminence. When the two words are combined, El Elyon – it’s translated as “the most exalted God and signifies a relationship with Jehovah when used in scripture.” El Elyon is used 28 times in the Old Testament and 19 of those times were in Psalms. David said, “I cry out to the Most-High Elohim, to El who is perfecting all matters for me, to God who fulfills His purpose for me.” (Psalms 57:2) Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in Your book and planned before one of them began. (Psalms 139:16) Jehovah El Elyon saw you when you were formless before the foundations of the earth, and He planned every day of your life. He is the Most-High God!
Abram heard that his nephew Lot had been captured and he mobilized trained men to attack Kederlaomer’s army at night, and he recovered all the goods that had been taken. He recovered Lot, his family, and all his goods. Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, brought Abram some bread and wine. Melchizedek knew the Most-High (El Elyon) and he blessed Abram with this blessing: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be God Most High, (El Elyon) who has defeated your enemies for you.”
Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he recovered. The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give back my people who were captured, but you may keep for yourself all the goods you have recovered.” Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I solemnly swear to the Lord, God Most High, (El Elyon), Creator of heaven and earth, that I will not take so much as a single thread or sandal thong from what belongs to you. Otherwise, you might say, ‘I am the one who made Abram rich.’ I will accept only what my young warriors have already eaten, and I request that you give a fair share of the goods to my allies—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre.” (Genesis 14:18-24 NLT) Jehovah El Elyon is the King of kings, the Lord of lords, and the God of gods. He is the Most-High God!
