How Do You See Yourself?

My child, how do you see yourself? Mephibosheth saw himself as a dead dog because he was lame. He felt unworthy of being noticed by anyone, especially the King. David didn’t see him that way. On that day, people often showed hatred and disrespect toward Mephibosheth because of his physical condition. No matter how low you are, I can reach down in the depths of the earth and pull you up, push you out, position and favor you.  He was five years old when the report came from Jezreel that his grandfather Saul and father Jonathan had been killed in battle. When the child’s nurse heard the news, she picked him up and fled. But as she hurried away, she dropped him, and he became crippled for the rest of his life. (2 Samuel 4:4 NLT) His nurse fled to Lo-Debar, which is considered a low place, in fact, it is the lowest of places of poverty. (2 Samuel 9:3-4 NLT) It’s not a place you want to go! King David spared Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth, because of the oath David and Jonathan had sworn before the Lord. (2 Samuel 21:7 NLT)

Mephibosheth’s mother was Rizpah, Jonathan’s concubine. Rizpah’s other two sons were hung on a hill before the Lord, and she spread burlap on a rock and went into deep intercession as only a mother would who has lost a child. She went into isolation just her and her God. She stayed in that place from Passover till November protecting her son’s bodies from being eaten by beasts or birds. (2 Samuel 21:10 NLT) Prayer and intercession capture the attention of the King of Kings. Some years later, when David had subdued all the adversaries of Israel, he began thinking of Jonathan’s family. He discovered that Mephibosheth was living in Lo Debar. King David sent his royal messengers and brought him and his infant son Mica to Jerusalem. Mephibosheth moved into the King’s residence and ate at his table for the rest of his life. David favored him, and he moved from poverty to the palace! (2 Samuel 9:5-13 NLT) King David’s mercy toward Mephibosheth is similar to Christ’s mercy toward you and me. We are redeemed Mephibosheth’s! Christ Jesus is inviting us to taste and see that He is good. (Psalms 34:18) He is inviting you to come and dine (John 21:12) with Him at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. (Revelation 19:6-9) Come close to God, and He will come close to you! (James 4:8 NLT)
