The Power of Blessing
Beloved one, the blessing of God can change your life. By the blessing of God, Abraham received the prophetic promise that he would father the Hebrew nation – God’s chosen people – and in the process, he became one of the richest men of his day. By the blessing of God, Job was able to recover all he had lost. By the blessing of God, the humble shepherd, David, became the ruler of a mighty empire. No matter who you are or what your abilities and circumstances are, if you tap into the blessing of God, you will be thrust forward into a life of increase, multiplication, and destiny. What is a blessing? Most believers talk about and pray for blessing, but don’t really comprehend what a blessing is. Yet, the blessing of God is one of the most important biblical principles. The word ‘bless’ or ‘blessing’ is used 474 times in the Bible, which tells us how important it is to God. He wants us to understand and walk in the blessing, not just for our own sake, but so we can demonstrate His Kingdom by helping others.
The first mention of blessing in the Bible is (Genesis 1:22) where God’s blessing is described as the release of fruitfulness and multiplication. That gives us significant insight into the nature of blessing. So, we can define ‘blessing’ like this: ‘Blessing is the anointing of God to release increase, prosperity, and the multiplication of all that is good and pleasant in life.
These scriptures describe what God’s blessing is:
He will love you and bless you, and he will give you many children. He will give fertility to your land and your animals. When you arrive in the land, he swore to give your ancestors, you will have large harvests of grain, new wine, and olive oil, and great herds of cattle, sheep, and goats. You will be blessed above all the nations of the earth. None of your men or women will be childless, and all your livestock will bear young. And the Lord will protect you from all sickness. He will not let you suffer from the terrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all your enemies! (Deuteronomy 7:13-15)
Your towns and your fields will be blessed. Your children and your crops will be blessed. The offspring of your herds and flocks will be blessed. Your fruit baskets and breadboards will be blessed. Wherever you go and whatever you do, you will be blessed. “The Lord will conquer your enemies when they attack you. They will attack you from one direction, but they will scatter from you in seven! “The Lord will guarantee a blessing on everything you do and will fill your storehouses with grain. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you. “If you obey the commands of the Lord your God and walk in his ways, the Lord will establish you as his holy people as he swore, he would do. Then all the nations of the world will see that you are a people claimed by the Lord, and they will stand in awe of you. “The Lord will give you prosperity in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you, blessing you with many children, numerous livestock, and abundant crops. The Lord will send rain at the proper time from his rich treasury in the heavens and will bless all the work you do. You will lend to many nations, but you will never need to borrow from them. (Deuteronomy 28:3-12)
The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow to it. (Proverbs 10:22) These scriptures show that God’s blessing is a comprehensive blessing. This includes the fullness of provision, perfect health, protection, and success in everything we put our hands to. (Joshua 1:7-9) God wants you to know the fullness of blessing in every area of your life. In Genesis 24:1, God blessed Abraham ‘in all things.’ That means he was blessed in every area of life. That same measure of blessing is God’s desire for you and me.
Jesus took upon Himself the curse so that we could receive ‘the blessing of Abraham.’ But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith. (Galatians 3:13-14) The bottom line, God desires to bless you as He blessed Abraham!
