Teach Your Children Financial Principles
Teach your children these financial principles and commandments, this goes along with the fifth commandment honor your father and mother and it will go well with you and you will live a long life. (Exodus 20:12) Why would God want a child to honor their parents? Because they learn from their parents. They learn the precepts of God from their parents. They learn principles and values from their parents. God said in the Bible, ‘you shall teach your children these things. (Deuteronomy 6:7) You shall tell your children about the Red Sea parting! Start by explaining that God led His people by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire by night. (Exodus 13:20-22) Think about this, ‘how many parents teach their children how to handle their finances?
Have you ever messed up financially? Have you run up credit cards? I have. In 2008, I went through a dark season and needed medical attention. I decided to put it on the care credit card the doctors offered and pay it off. I made a sizeable payment every month and the amount charged was remaining the same every month. I couldn’t get it paid off because the interest on that card was so high. Guess what? The people who have the wisdom to advise you how to get out of your mess, have messed up too so don’t be embarrassed. How do you think you become wise in finances? You learn from your mistakes! I prayed and asked God to help me to pay off ALL my credit cards and I would not do that again.
One day I was cleaning my files out in the office and came across a letter from the credit card company that said my card was insured and if I ever was ill and off work for 90 days or more my balance would be paid in full. I thought surely, I misunderstood the letter and called the company. They said, ‘yes ma’am if your doctor will write a letter stating you have been ill and under his care for 90 days, your debt will be canceled and paid in full. I was astonished! I had been off work in 2012 for more than six months with a serious case of shingles on the left side of my face and in my hair. I lost my hearing and sight for six months. I went to my doctor and asked him if he would write a letter for me stating I had been under his care at that time had been more than six months. He said, ‘yes!’ I sent the letter in, and not only was my credit card paid in full they sent me a check for $1100.00.
I disciplined myself and paid every card off and today, I have No Debt! I owe no man except to love him. (Romans 13:8) Whatever I spend, I pay it off every month! Can I tell you the peace and freedom it gives me? I got myself in a mess, and God helped me by disciplining myself to get out of debt. Today, I ask God before I make a purchase. My heart and passion are to win souls and build the Kingdom of God, and it’s not about things! God delivered me of things and if he can do it for me, He can do it for you! Can I tell you I have learned from my mistakes, and I have a lot of wisdom in this area? How do you get wisdom? You make mistakes and learn from them! You learn what not to do! Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment. (Proverbs 4:7)
